Shri Bankey Bihari Ji

  • Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple, located in the sacred town of Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, is one of the most revered and iconic temples dedicated to Lord Krishna. The deity of Bankey Bihari, depicting Lord Krishna in His playful and enchanting form, is adored by millions of devotees worldwide. The term “Bankey” means bent in three places, and “Bihari” signifies the supreme enjoyer, together reflecting Krishna’s charming tribhanga posture. The temple was established by the great saint Swami Haridas, a devotee and spiritual teacher of Lord Krishna. It is believed that the idol of Bankey Bihari Ji appeared miraculously to Swami Haridas during one of his meditative sessions in Nidhivan, the mystical grove where Krishna is said to perform His divine pastimes. This self-manifested deity exudes such divine beauty and charm that devotees are captivated by His presence. The temple follows a unique tradition where the darshan (viewing) of the deity is intermittent, with a curtain drawn before the idol every few minutes. This practice stems from the belief that the deity’s divine gaze is so powerful that it can overwhelm the hearts of the devotees. The temple’s atmosphere is always vibrant, with the melodious chanting of bhajans and the constant buzz of devotees expressing their love and devotion. Festivals are celebrated with great zeal at Shri Bankey Bihari Ji Temple, especially Holi, Janmashtami, and Radhashtami. During Holi, the temple becomes a canvas of colors, with devotees playfully smearing each other with fragrant gulal in Krishna's spirit of divine joy.
